About Miss Heather
Hello! You have come to the right place if you want to learn more about me. My name is Heather Tierney and I teach at Susitna Elementary School in Anchorage, Alaska. I am a teacher, mom and wife. I am originally from Idaho, but have lived all over the world. When I got married in 1998, my husband's job took us from Idaho to Guam, then to Italy, and finally to Anchorage. We have two handsome boys and two furry dogs...what an exciting life! I look forward to teaching each and every child in my classroom this year and having my students teach me a thing or two!
Teaching Experience
This is my ninth year teaching in the Open Optional Program at Susitna Elementary. I co-taught in one of our K/1 classrooms my first year at Susitna; after that, I moved to a 2/3 class where I have been ever since. I have also acted as a before and after school reading and math tutor off and on, as well as the 3/4 Battle of the Books coach.
I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Alaska Anchorage. Since graduating, I have taken many professional development classes to learn innovative ways of facilitating a positive and productive learning environment.

Hobbies
I absolutely love to spend time at home with my family. We play a lot of board games and I have even been known to play an occasional video game with my kids. I love to read stories to children, so I definitely do that often. I enjoy curling up on my couch with my family (including my dogs) and just hanging out. My most cherished hobby during the school year, however, is to sleep in on the weekends!
My professional passions are infusing Social Emotional Learning and technology into my classroom. I believe that in the world we live in, people desperately need to feel a sense of belonging to a community. My students and I work every day to create a positive, safe, and supportive environment where we can take chances and express ourselves. We build our team each day through Experiential Education (carefully chosen hands-on activities that support Social Emotional growth through voluntary participation, making decisions, and assuming accountability for his/her actions).
Technology is a natural avenue to attract kids' attention, so I infuse it into my classroom regularly. From the introduction of new concepts, presentation of each day's morning message, display of student work to the utilization of a visual vocabulary study during class read-alouds, technology holds a critical role in the success of my classroom.
